2022 Local Elections - Lib Dem Success Across Our Target Seats!

This was a successful election for the Lib Dems, winning all 6 of our target wards across Milton Keynes for the first time since 2014!

After a painful year in 2021 when our party won only three of our target seats, since then a year of hard campaigning for residents across our wards has given us our best election result in Milton Keynes for nearly a decade!

This means the party successfully defended held seats across five wards, and gained one seat from the Conservatives in Campbell Park and Old Woughton.

The results across our six target wards were:

• Bradwell: Rex Exon won with 1769 votes, a vote share of 57.4%
• Broughton: Sam Crooks won with 1971 votes, a vote share of 50.9%
• Campbell Park and Old Woughton (CPOW): Nana Oguntola won with 1712 votes, a vote share of 44.5%
• Monkston: Jenni Ferrans won with 1540 votes, a vote share of 57.7%
• Newport Pagnell South: Andy Carr won with 1620 votes, a vote share of 50.1%
• Shenley Brook End: Peter Cannon won with 1487 votes, a vote share of 45.9%

Among the above 6 winners, Andy Carr and Nana Oguntola are new borough councillors who have been elected to MK Council for the first time, and Peter Cannon was re-elected after not winning in 2021.

Two of our councillors did not restand in their wards, so we give a thanks to Paul Alexander (who didn't restand in Newport Pagnell South) and Andy Reilly (who didn't restand in Shenley Brook End) for their hard work supporting residents in their wards and their work on the council.

A big thank you to all others who represented the party in wards we knew we had little chance of winning this election, to election agents and those who helped our campaignes, which included volunteer deliverers, and members from local parties near Milton Keynes.

What do these results mean for MK Council?

Milton Keynes Council elects one third of councillors each year, so only one third was elected this year, with two thirds being those elected in 2019 and 2021.

The seats for each party are now (change from 2018 in brackets):

• Labour: 20* (+1)
• Liberal Democrats: 14 (+1)
• Conservatives: 23 (-2)

*One of Labour's 20 seats will be facing a by-election over the next few months, after the sad death of Cllr Carole Baume.

As no individual party has a majority on the council (they would need at least 29 seats) MK Council is 'no overall control' and there will be negotiations between parties about who will run MK Council over the next year.
