A Good Election for MK Lib Dems
Across Milton Keynes the Liberal Democrats had a successful election this year, winning in 6 wards and getting a much closer result in a seventh. The party went into the election with 14 councillors, this year successfully defending 5 seats and gaining 1, so the party now holds 15 of the 57 seats on MK council.
A summary of the election results in our main target wards this year is below.
Robin Bradburn retained his seat with another strong majority this year, receiving 57% of the vote.
- Robin (Lib Dem): 1652 votes
- Labour: 755 votes
- Conservatives: 476 votes
Kerrie Barratt was given a resounding vote of support by residents across Broughton ward with 59% of the vote, a majority of over 1200, a huge increase in the majority of almost 500 when she was first elected here in 2019.
The results were:
- Kerrie (Lib Dem): 2093
- Conservatives: 818
- Labour: 561
- Heritage: 87
Paul Trendall was given a clear message of support by voters in Campbell Park and Old Woughton ward (sometimes known as CPOW) with a strong majority, which was much more confortable at the count than when he was first elected in 2019 with a margin of 12 votes, and 5 recounts!
- Paul (Lib Dem): 1695
- Conservatvies: 1031
- Labour: 615
- Green: 193
Ben Adewale is one of the two new Liberal Democrat councillors on MK council, after replacing Leo Montague who did not re-stand in Monkston Ward. Best of luck to Ben as he takes on the role as councillor.
Ben said "This is a win for all of us, a great thanks to the great Monkston people for believing in me and choosing me to represent them. My sincere appreciation goes to all our campaign volunteers who worked relentlessly in all weather to distribute our focus leaflets and letters. This would not have been possible without you. We are all a great team and I will always count on you to make our community better."
The results were:
- Ben (Lib Dem): 1270
- Conservatives: 546
- Labour: 471
- Green: 174
Scott Humphries ran a good campaign across Newport Pagnell North and Hanslope, and while he didn't win this year his campaign increasesed support for our party across the ward.
After the results were announced, Scott said "A great result given the huge Tory majority in this seat on previous years. The electorate sent out a clear message that times are changing. 1162 votes was very humbling, I will continue to work tirelessly for those that had faith in me."
The results were:
- Conservatives: 1628
- Scott (Lib Dem): 1162
- Labour: 737
- Womens Equality: 128
We're delighted that Jane Carr was re-elected by voters across Newport Pagnell South ward despite the Tory attacks, including Tory misinformation and visits by Conservative MPs. It was clear through the campaign that Newport Pagnell South was one of the top Targets in MK, but voters saw through them to deliver a clear majority for Jane.
Jane said "Thank you to all our supporters and helpers, and everyone who voted for me on Thursday. It is a privilege to be re-elected but we do not have time to sit back. We are already back out working as residents continuing to see that we're always putting them first will be the foundation of our 2024 campaign."
The results are:
- Jane (Lib Dem): 1475
- Conservatives: 1098
- Labour: 510
- Reform: 120
Sophie Bell was elected as a new councillor in Shenley Brook End, which was also a gain from the Conservatives this year. At the election the result came down to a nail-biting four votes, which were thoroughly checked by the council staff before a recount which confirmed the same margin.
The results are:
- Sophie (Lib Dem): 1184
- Conservatives: 1180
- Labour: 529
- Green: 164
Thank you to everyone who represented our party in other wards. We had candidates in every part of Milton Keynes and the towns/villages within the borough, so people could vote for our party wherever they are.
Please back our campaign for proportional representation! While people living in the areas above will have known we were campaigning hard, the current First Past the Post electoral system punishes parties which campaign everywhere, by forcing them to target a smaller number of winnable seats. As a result in many elections there are a number of 'safe seats' which unfortuantly get ignored much of the time. We support proportional representation for elections so that the number of seats earned much more closely matches the number of people who voted for that party. This would then reward parties for campaignign everywhere, rather than just in a small number of marginal seats.
These were the results in other parts of the borough of Milton Keynes.
