City councillors propose new policy that prioritises the greatest good for the greatest number of residents
If the motion is passed, Milton Keynes City Council will become the first local authority in the UK to voluntarily commit to such a principle, ensuring long-term benefits for its residents.
The Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, Councillor Paul Trendall will move the motion.
Councillor Trendall will ask the City Council to introduce an assessment framework to evaluate whether any new or amended policy, or decision, will deliver, in the long-term “Net Good” for the city’s residents.
This ambitious new initiative will adopt a guiding principle that prioritises the greatest good for the greatest number of residents whilst giving due consideration to vulnerable groups who may need additional support.
The proposed “Net Good” assessment aims to instil a duty of care in the City Council’s decision-making processes, which will hold the City Council to a higher standard of governance.
This initiative shows a forward-thinking approach to policymaking, prioritising the wellbeing of residents above all else and addressing the long-term implications of council decisions.
Councillor Trendall, said:
“Milton Keynes has always been a place of innovation, leading the way in technology and business. By adopting the ‘Net Good’ assessment, we’re setting a new and improved benchmark for responsible governance. Going forward, this will ensure every decision we make leaves a positive legacy for residents across the city.”
Bradwell Councillor Robert Exon, who will be seconding the motion, added:
“This exciting new idea reflects the Lib Dem’s commitment to creating a fairer, more inclusive, and forward-thinking city. The goal is simple, we want to ensure the City Council’s decisions leave Milton Keynes better off for everyone.”
