On Wednesday night, Lib Dem councillors and fellow members joined MK Food Bank to help sort through thousands of food cans collected by the local community in Campbell Park on Monday 16 October also known as World Food Day.

Councillors Paul Trendall, Marie Bradburn, Robert Exon, Sophie Bell, and local members gave the Food Bank a helping hand, getting to work on sorting, processing, and preparing food so it can be distributed to those in need.

Last month, over 200 local organisations worked together to collect over 100,000 cans of soup, baked beans, fruit, and more, and on Wednesday evening, the Lib Dems showed their support for the charity by sorting hundreds of cans by date and type.

The Lib Dem efforts will help the charity to organise and distribute food to those who need it the most over the winter months.

Councillor Paul Trendall, who represents Campbell Park and Old Woughton ward, said:

“Having volunteered at the Food Bank since the pandemic, I have seen how rapidly demand for food has risen over the last few years. MK Can was a great success for driving donations, but it’s sad that this is needed to support struggling households across the city.”

Last year, the City Council gave an extra £80,000 to MK Food Bank to help with top-up shops and food parcels, and this year as part of the Winter Plan, the City Council will continue to support food charities in MK to support the most vulnerable.

Bradwell Councillor Marie Bradburn, added:

“The Food Bank is one of the many amazing charities that we have here in Milton Keynes who make it their mission to tackle food poverty across the city. The Lib Dems are big supporters of the Food Bank, and it was great to offer them a helping hand!”

Councillor Paul Trendall, concluded:

“The Food Bank are always grateful for volunteers, if you can spare a few hours to help out, please contact them.”
