MK Lib Dems: A new home for women in politics
Commenting on the decision to dissolve the WEP, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, Councillor Jane Carr, said:
“We respect the work of the Women’s Equality Party and the impact they have had in raising awareness of equality issues. As they close this chapter, we want to offer a new home for their former members and supporters who are looking to join a party that is proud to stand for fairness, diversity, and inclusion. Women bring invaluable perspectives to local government, and we are determined that women are not just part of the conversation but are leading it.”
The Lib Dem’s recent success in the Bradwell and Broughton by-elections means almost half of their councillors are women.
Councillor Kerrie Bradburn, Chair of the Liberal Democrat Group on Milton Keynes City Council, added:
“Standing up for equality is at the heart of who we are as Liberal Democrats, and we have a proven track record of doing just that. Not only have we backed WASPI women, but we have also promoted the White Ribbon campaign amongst taxi drivers to ensure a more positive experience for women travelling across the city.”
At Full Council last month, Lib Dem councillors moved a motion backing the official WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaign to support those affected in Milton Keynes.
The Lib Dems put forward a motion earlier this year which saw the revision of the City Council’s Taxi Licensing Policy to include education about domestic abuse and promote the White Ribbon scheme with licence holders. This was in response to reports from women who had experienced inappropriate behaviour or language from drivers whilst travelling across the city.
