A successful welcome event for some of our new members, as Lib Dem membership nationally and in MK reach record highs.

Over 20 Lib Dem members and supporters in MK gathered as we welcomed some of our newbies last Tuesday. It was fantastic to see so many new members from different walks of life. Some of our new members and supporters had previously been members of other parties, with others getting involved with a party for the first time. Whatever your level of political engagement has been we simply say - welcome.

After the event one new member posted in the private Facebook group "As a complete newbie I found that the group where friendly, open and interesting and willing to talk about life.. Not just politics. Thank you."

Our new joiners are part of the Lib Dem surge as membership in Milton Keynes has now hit the highest level ever, and member numbers in MK have risen by over 20% since the local elections on 2nd May!

As well as general talk getting to know each other, there was much chat both about the recent successes the Liberal Democrats have scored in both local and European elections as well as the merits of the two leadership contenders for the party. Unlike some other parties we can mention, the general consensus at the gathering was that the Liberal Democrats are fortunate to have two seasoned and progressive campaigners in Ed Davey and Jo Swinson. Both are unambiguously clear on the biggest issue of the day and campaign passionately and clearly.

There was also discussion about ways of getting involved in politics whether it is leafleting or canvassing, or even standing as a candidate in local elections. Two of our newly elected Councillors Leo Montague and Paul Trendall were able to give some feedback into the work that is involved in becoming an elected representative.

If for whatever reason you were unable to attend the social, we are planning to meet regularly at All Bar One each month, with the next event planned for Tuesday 2nd July 2019 (click here to see more details and RSVP). We also intend to host other socials in different venues to cater for a variety of interests. We will keep you posted.

If you agree with us that it is time to Demand Better in politics, to stop Brexit, and to stand up for liberal and progressive values then you should become a member (or registered supporter) of the Liberal Democrats.
